A mobility aid that is the wrong type or the wrong height can make a fall more likely, so ask your doctor or physical therapist which aid fits you and have them check the fit before you rely on it, especially after surgery or a recent fall.

Follow each manufacturer's weight limits and setup instructions. Lock a rollator's brakes before you sit on it or stand up from it, and never ride on it while someone pushes. Check cane tips, wheels and brakes regularly and replace worn parts. Watch for wet floors, loose rugs, thresholds and curbs. Use a car door handle only on a parked car, and confirm it fits your door latch. A bed assist bar is a handle for getting up, not a rail that keeps anyone from rolling out of bed; a gap between a bar and a mattress can trap a person, so check the fit often and do not use one for someone who is confused or cannot move on their own. If you fall or feel a sudden change in balance or strength, call your doctor. In an emergency, call 911.
